 The Mirko Virius Gallery
The Mirko Virius Gallery is located right in the heart of the pedestrian zone of the capital of Croatia. In its charming position in a Baroque two-storey house of the end of the 18th century, occupying some eighty square meters of exhibitions space, it has been cultivating the art of mounting exhibitions for a full 24 years.
The very name of Mirko Virius (Delekovec, 1989 - Zemun, 1943), peasant and self-taught painter, who in just four years of painting created an oeuvre that we may well say marked the epoch, indicates the nature of the gallery's operations, in which it is primarily self-taught art that is addressed.
The Gallery is the exhibition salon of the Croatian Association of Naive Artists, but during the whole of the time of its work, the Gallery has not been a mere ghetto for just one poetic form of artistic expression. Many other kind of events take place in the premises as well book launches, print folder presentations, concerts are held, video screenings and various kinds of receptions. There has also actually been a considerable effort made to present the new, whether from Croatia or from abroad. The exhibition programme of the Gallery was particularly designed, and this is still one of its major objectives, with a view to investigative work in the field of the Naive, and thus exhibitions that have certainly expanded the concept of what the Naive really is have been put on. This has led to the adoption of certain new views, not to mention the fomenting of polemics about the achievements of the concept of the Naive.
In parallel with the regular programme, agreed on with the Municipal Culture Office, with the support of which it works, the Gallery is also involved in the sale of works of art and souvenirs, and every day it is possible to obtain in these pleasant historical premises something from a wide array of nad've art and authentic Croatian souvenirs.
We are looking forward to meeting you and welcoming to you to the Mirko Virius Gallery, where the well-qualified personnel will endeavour to meet your diverse wishes and needs.
